He attended James Monroe High School in Los Angeles for his early education. He was later enrolled at Los Angeles Pierce College and USC. At the age of 12, he was already using the Art of social Engineering and dumpster diving to bypass the punch card system. Even now most of his lectures are about social Engineering.
His hobbies were to learn more about how computer systems and telecommunication systems work.
As a young boy, he was taught in high school that hacking was cool.

Becoming the worlds most wanted hacker
At the age of 16, he gained unauthorized access into Digital Equipment Cooperation network, resulting the DEC hack. He managed to do it having only a dial-up number of the DEC computer system. Mitnick mastered the phreaking technique at his young age and was able to gain access to system files of the California Department of motor vehicles. He was able to gain access and hack US leasing company, GTE telephone company, and Santa Cruz Operations (SCO). He also hacked Nokia, Motorola, NEC companies and gained their source code. He was fired from the GTE company only after 9 days of job because he denies having a background check on him.
Imprisonment and Release
Though he was turned in to the police for his actions, he got lucky by his age many times. He was arrested a number of times between the 1970s to 1995. He was convicted of breaking into the Pentagon computer in 1983 which he still says it’s a myth. In 1995 he was caught for breaking into America’s most secure computer systems. He was kept in solitary confinement, as the FBI believes he could trigger third world war merely making a phone call and whistling a code into it. He was facing up to 460 years in prison, however the “Free Kevin” campaign quickly created after hearing the prosecutors charges. Because of this, his sentence reduced to only 5 years.
I’m still a hacker. I get paid for it now. I never received any monetary gain from the hacking I did before. The main difference in what I do now compared to what I did then is that I now do it with authorization.
